Ambient Interstellar Pressure and Superbubble Evolution

چکیده

High ambient interstellar pressure is suggested as a possible factor to explain the ubiquitous observed growth-rate discrepancy for supernova-driven superbubbles and stellar wind bubbles. Pressures of P/k ∼ 10 cm K are plausible for regions with high star formation rates, and these values are intermediate between the estimated Galactic mid-plane pressure and those observed in starburst galaxies. High-pressure components also are commonly seen in Galactic ISM localizations. We demonstrate the sensitivity of shell growth to the ambient pressure, and suggest that superbubbles ultimately might serve as ISM barometers. The superbubble model for LiBeB production and Galactic evolution

We show that the available constraints relating to LiBeB Galactic evolution can be accounted for by the so-called superbubble model, according to which particles are efficiently accelerated inside superbubbles out of a mixture of supernova ejecta and ambient interstellar medium. The corresponding energy spectrum is required to be flat at low energy (in E below 500 MeV/n, say), as expected from ...

Dynamical Evolution and Ionization Structure of an Expanding Superbubble : Application to W 4

Recent observations have revealed a superbubble associated with the young stellar cluster OCl 352 near the W4 H II region: a void in H I emission (Normandeau, Taylor, & Dewdney), and a bright shell in Hα emission (Dennison, Topasna, & Simonetti). We investigate the hypothesis that the bubble is blown by stellar winds from the O-type stars in the association. The Kompaneets approximation is adap...

Cosmic Ray Acceleration in Superbubbles and the Composition of Cosmic Rays

We review the evidence for cosmic ray acceleration in the superbubble/hot phase of the interstellar medium, and discuss the implications for the composition of cosmic rays and the structure and evolution of the interstellar medium (ISM). We show that the bulk of the galactic supernovae, their expanding remnants, together with their metal-rich grain and gas ejecta, and their cosmic ray accelerat...

Connecting Interstellar Gas in and out of the Heliosphere

Interstellar material around the Sun is typical for our neighborhood of the Galaxy. The physical properties and kinematics of the partially ionized interstellar material (ISM) near the Sun are typical of warm diffuse clouds in the solar vicinity. The direction of the interstellar magnetic field at the heliosphere, the polarization of light from nearby stars, and the kinematics of nearby clouds ...

The Galactic Environment of the Sun: Interstellar Material Inside and Outside of the Heliosphere

Interstellar material (ISMa) is observed both inside and outside of the heliosphere. Relating these diverse sets of ISMa data provides a richer understanding of both the interstellar medium and the heliosphere. The galactic environment of the Sun is dominated by warm, low-density, partially ionized interstellar material consisting of atoms and dust grains. The properties of the heliosphere are ...
